Biblioteques de Barcelona (Libraries of Barcelona): building the present, looking towards the future
Abstract
Objectives. To evaluate the development of Barcelona's libraries in the period covered by the Barcelona Libraries Plan (1998-2010) and to identify the priorities that will guide them in the next ten years.
Method. The evaluation involved analysing the situation prior to the implementation of the Plan and the changes in the main indicators in terms of resources and the impact that they have had. Proposals for the future were drawn up on the basis of some of the topics identified by the Advisory Committee, which was formed by the Libraries of Barcelona to write the document Biblioteques de Barcelona: 10 anys +. Nous reptes, nous compromisos (Libraries of Barcelona: 10 years +. New challenges, new commitments), and from participation in a conference on the Futures of Public Libraries.
Results. The analysis of the twelve years of work undertaken since the approval of the Barcelona Libraries Plan 1998-2010 showed a highly positive situation. Objectives have been met and the milestones achieved have surpassed expectations. In some cases, services and programs have been introduced that were not included in the Plan, to keep in line with social and technological changes in the environment. Twelve priorities for the future have been identified, which will enable the libraries of Barcelona to face and adapt to the new challenges that arise as a result of constant social changes.
