Information competence in Translation : an analysis of university students' habits in consulting and using sources of information

Objectives: To analyse the habits university students of Translation adopt when searching for information: to identify the tools and resources they use, the sources they consult and the selection criteria they apply.

Methodology: Quantitative analysis based on closed-ended survey items completed by students in a bachelor's degree programme in translation at the Faculty of Translation of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

Results: Increasingly, these students are favouring easy-to-access digital resources over more traditional sources like libraries or databases, even when searching for specialized information. The result is that students are assigning less importance to concepts like authorship and source quality. The study emphasizes the need to adapt teaching strategies to help students improve their information competence and promote a number of related skills, including the critical evaluation and selection of sources of information.
