The creation of Spain's first interuniversity library : the Biblioteca del Campus Universitari de Manresa

Ten years ago three different university libraries merged to form a single library centre. These were: the library of the Escola Politècnica Superior d'Enginyeria de Manresa, which is part of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya; the library of the Fundació Universitària de Bages; and the library of the Centre de Suport de Bages, which is part of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. The new library centre was the Biblioteca del Campus Universitari de Manresa (BCUM) and this paper describes the process by which the centre was created. It examines the libraries that were joined together, the ways in which the institutions involved benefited from the experience and the different models created. The paper then describes the actions taken to fully connect the systems managing library users, resources and services, and the structures used to efficiently integrate the existing libraries in the BCUM. In general terms, therefore, the paper analyzes the context and describes the management of each of the phases in the overall process, from the initial planning and definition of the project to the total integration of the systems managing library staff, services, the collection and the catalogue. Finally, the paper includes the accounts of people who were involved, in this ten-year period, in the work of integrating the three centres.
