Objective: This paper examines the training that lecturers in health sciences at the University of Valencia consider they need to use OpenCourseWare in their classes. The paper also examines the marketing and information strategies these lecturers believe their institution should use to encourage the increased use of OpenCourseWare and the deposit of materials.

Methodology: The research was qualitative and the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with members of the teaching staff of the University.

Results: It was observed that lecturers’ perceived training needs for using OpenCourseWare vary according to such factors as personal teaching experience, level of ICT skills, and the organization of teaching materials. Specifically, lecturers thought they needed training in OCW package itself, in ICT at different levels, in the principles of open access and, in the case of less experienced members of staff, in teaching with technology. The marketing strategies they considered should be implemented were: institutional promotion, diffusion and individualization of OpenCourseWare and the provision of information on intellectual copyright, reward systems, motivation and visibility.

Objectives: This paper seeks to provide a comprehensive description of user experience focusing on multi-platform navigation and using Responsive Web Design as a guiding principle for current web design.

Methodology: The research reviewed current Responsive Web Design literature.

Results: As the study observed, today’s navigation environments need to be made accessible from any device and websites that fail to adapt are increasingly undermining user experience. It was also noted that the current trend is to consolidate multiple channels in a single platform, URL or virtual space that gathers together the functions and features that define each of its websites and which can progressively adapt to the increasing number of mobile device models being marketed.

The paper reports the technical implementation of the text-to-speech application ReadSpeaker in the University of Barcelona’s content management system, Moodle, which is used to run its online campus the Campus Virtual. The implementation was completed using only a Moodle template and modifying DOM operations with JavaScript code.

Objectives: The objective was to implement a text-to-speech tool in the University of Barcelona’s content management system, Moodle, and so provide greater accessibility to this program environment. The tool speech-enables the content of both web pages and PDF files.

Methodology: An analysis was made of the University’s content management system, Moodle, and the text-to-speech tool was then tailored to function correctly in the program.

Results: The tool was successfully incorporated in the University’s online campus. At the time of writing, access to PDF files is only possible if they are opened first.

In 2012 the Library Network of the Instituto Cervantes launched a new e-book loan and download service for all its members. The main innovation is the system for selecting the collection: a title-by-title scheme, drawing on different sources and involving purchase for perpetuity or the donation of the content. This management model operates equally for books that are free of copyright as for new materials and works under copyright. The aim is to provide the services of a specialized digital library whose management is conducted directly through publishers and distributors in Spain and other countries. One difficulty arising from this selection system is that the supply of new books available in electronic format for libraries remains small. To encourage this supply and to reduce costs, the Instituto Cervantes offers advantages to publishers (including, converting the libraries in the network in media for the dissemination and promotion of the e-book and as generators of business). A further initiative aimed at increasing availability of e-books in the catalogue and offering a more sustainable service is that of implementing joint projects for institutional publications, combining cooperation and innovation, and providing benefits for all participants.

Objective: to analyse the introduction of the scientific and technical e-book collection of the Rocasolano Chemistry-Physics Library (Biqfr) of CSIC and the strategies adopted for the dissemination, creation, implementation, and management of the collection between 2007 and 2009.

Methodology: an in-depth interview was conducted with the director of the research library, and field work was undertaken with the other Biqfr librarians. The information obtained from these two sources was used to analyse aspects of the introduction of e-books from a diachronic perspective.

Results: the library was one of the first to introduce e-books, which represented certain challenges for the librarians, especially as regards making the resources visible and promoting their use among researchers. The librarians adopted various strategies to create and disseminate the collection, enabling them to gain experience in their management and to identify the unique characteristics of this resource in comparison with traditional journals and databases.

Description of a training activity designed for the chronically sick and for those aged over fifty with few ICT skills, based on a joint undertaking between a city council and a primary care team (PCT). The objectives of the activity are to use ICTs as an element in promoting collaboration between health professionals and the public, awakening the critical spirit of those who seek health information on the Internet and providing tools for the evaluation of the information found. Details of the activity: explanation of the basic criteria for evaluating web sites (authority, currency, coverage, objectivity, accuracy and veracity of the contents), identification of the hallmarks of quality and presentation of the prescription web. Conclusions: to avoid problems attributable to the consultation of poor quality information about health on the Internet, specific training should be given. The promotion of coordinated actions between local services, such as public libraries and primary care teams, is recommended.

Figura 1.

In recent years online participation has become an essential object of study in research conducted into the new media. This participation of the individual citizen not only attracts the attention of researchers, but it is also a unique opportunity for many organizations to form virtual communities of users. This paper presents the development of a Lotus Notes application for analysing the Comunidad Marca, one of the most used sports forums in Spain, with more than 400,000 registered users. The program enables researchers to examine the behaviour of participants, including the interaction between users and web-user interaction, with direct and valuable implications for media companies.

Figura 1

The purpose of the research and thinking presented in this article is to analyse which initiatives, in terms of the development and management of a collection, have to be taken to ensure it continues to be a key source of information and knowledge for the community. A particular focus is given to the policies of a specialist collection —that dedicated to the hobby of collecting— in the Library of Sant Antoni-Joan Oliver in Barcelona.

The aim of the study is described in relation to the overall theme of collecting, the classification of resources, the visibility of the library’s specialization when employing ICTs, the organisation of promotional activities, the writing of formal documents governing procurement policies and the management of funds and the creation of the library’s own resources, among others.
