Introduction: Production is an essential part of scientific activity and its visibility is an indicator for the evaluation of science. Scientific journals have been transformed and the open access movement has driven changes in our scholarly communication model.

Objective: This paper analyses the scientific journals used by researchers in information science in Brazil and the visibility of these journals in the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases by comparing the scientific production published in open access and restricted-access journals.

Methodology: Quantitative, exploratory and documentary analysis was made using the scientific production of researchers in information science in Brazil that receive productivity grants from the Brazilian National Research and Development Council (CNPq).

Results: It was found that researchers published primarily in open access national journals, and that the visibility of these journals in international databases did not significantly differ to the visibility of restricted-access publications.

Selección de ejemplos fundamentales de análisis de publicaciones cienciométricas

Figura 1.

Objective: This paper selects and outlines factors of central importance in the calculation, presentation and interpretation of publication analysis results from a scientometric perspective. The paper focuses on growth, world share analyses and the logic behind the computation of average numbers of authors, institutions or countries per publication indexed by Web of Science.

Methodology: The paper uses examples from earlier research evaluation studies and cases based on online data to describe issues, problematic details, pitfalls and how to overcome them in publication analysis with respect to analytic tool application, calculation, presentation and interpretation.

Results: By means of different kinds of analysis and presentation, the paper provides insight into scientometrics in the context of informetric analysis, selected cases of research productivity, publication patterns and research trends in the fields of renewable energy and wind power during different periods of history.

As observed in Appendix E of the Carta del Restauro (Carta della Conzervazione e del Restauro degli ogetti d’arte e di cultura [1987]), before undertaking any project of conservation or restoration, professionals must consider that as a cultural asset and in historical, artistic, material and functional terms, the book is a complex, multi-format artefact. Knowledge of the various original materials used to make books is crucial to such professionals and this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the main types of intrinsic degradation in the materials most commonly used in the history of book making.

Objective: This paper examines the current offering of the subject Project Management in bachelor’s and master’s degrees in information and documentation in Ibero-America, focusing on the countries Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela. The paper analyses different features of the subject in these degree courses to provide a general overview.

Methodology: A search obtained information about the offering of the subject Project Management in degree courses at an international level and the results were examined by university and by degree course. The university curricula were then analysed according to specific selection criteria, as outlined in the paper, and the researchers corresponded by email with the teaching staff responsible for these courses. Various parameters were studied and then recorded in a database. Finally, the results were analysed.

Results: After the universities, degrees and subjects had been identified and selected according to the research criteria, it was observed that 77% of the entire offering that included the degree course subject Project Management was to be found in first-cycle (bachelor’s) degrees, and that Mexico, Colombia and Spain were the countries where the offering was greatest. The study also showed that Project Management was a compulsory subject in 86 % of the sample analysed.

Objective: This paper describes how the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona manages the in-service training of its library staff, focusing on the association between the University’s administrative and service staff training unit and its library service.

Methodology: The paper reviews the process undertaken in recent years to offer training activities by detecting trainees’ needs, planning and implementing courses and evaluating training, both at an overall organizational level and in the university’s library service in particular.

Results: Progress has been made in in-service training and a larger number of training courses are now offered in more diverse formats. On the other hand, the offering still needs to be improved in certain areas, where promptly responding to trainee needs will become crucial.

Objectives: This paper examines how student interest in the scientific field of information and documentation can be identified and motivated, using the results of a study in the Spanish autonomous community of Extremadura.

Methodology: A 15-item questionnaire was administered to identify the value students assigned to creative, volitional and intellectual skills and a 25-item questionnaire was administered to identify the value they assigned to specific skills in information and documentation. Student interest was motivated by group discussions and specialized seminars. The respondents were first- and second-year university students at the University of Extremadura studying the bachelor’s degree Information and Documentation in its face-to-face mode during the academic year 2011-2012, and sixth-form students in centres of secondary education in the city of Badajoz, especially students of social sciences.

Results: In their assessment of creative, volitional and intellectual skills and of specific skills in information and documentation, the first- and second-year university students’ average score was higher than 83%. The interest shown in skills in information and documentation by the sixth-form students was also high, and the average score given was 66%. However, both groups assigned greater value to general skills than to specific skills. We argue that this is indicative of students’ customary lack knowledge of the subjects which the degree is supposed to make them specialists of, and that educators must therefore find more effective ways of promoting the importance of these subjects.

Objectives: This paper determines how Catalan cultural heritage is presented on the Internet by examining a selection of quality websites including the projects of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (National Museum of Art of Catalonia, MNAC) at Google’s Art Project, the web archive Patrimoni Digital de Catalunya (Digital Heritage of Catalonia, PADICAT), the Government of Catalonia’s Museus en línia (Online Museums), the Provincial Council of Barcelona’s Xarxa de Museus Locals (Network of Local Museums, XML), Barcelona City Council’s Carta arqueològica de Barcelona (Archaeological Map of Barcelona), the CCCBLab project at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (Barcelona Centre for Contemporary Culture, CCCB), the webpage Museus de Girona (Museums of Girona), and finally the project Viquiprojecte:ICUB, which was created by the Catalan language edition of Wikipedia and the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (Institute of Culture of Barcelona, ICUB).

Methodology: The study assessed the effectiveness, adequacy and usability of the websites by testing the quality of the features enabling users to consult, browse and view content.

Results: It was observed that museums use a wide range of methods to establish their presence online and that their public reach, the focus they choose (institution or exhibit) and the technology they use all vary considerably.

Figura 1. Servicios 2.0 incluidos en las tecnologías de nivel 2

Objectives: This paper examines the provision of Web 2.0 services and the consequent exclusion of Web 1.0 services in different libraries in the Basque network of public online libraries (Euskadiko Irakurketa Publikoko Sarea) in the province of Biscay.

Methodology: The researchers conducted case studies of different libraries in the network using a series of parameters and indicators to determine the provision of Web 2.0 and Web 1.0 services. Some of the parameters that were used are customary in the field while others were tailored to the requirements of the study. The data were retrieved during the period between September 2012 and February 2013.

Results: A disparity was observed between the libraries where some libraries consistently offered just Web 1.0 services while others offered a wide range of Web 2.0 services, which were fully maintained and updated. The main findings of this study were presented in the formulation of a Web 2.0 drop rate, an indicator that quantifies the effect of the trend for Web 2.0 services.
