Any de graduació

Objective: This paper analyses the employability of graduates in the bachelor’s degree in Information and Documentation of the University of Salamanca.

Methodology: A questionnaire consisting of closed-ended questions (suggested response, evaluation) and one open-ended question was administered in web format to the graduate students who had completed the degree in the period 2009-2012.

Results: Information and documentation graduates from the university in question were most commonly women whose motivation to become professionals was vocational. The respondents’ evaluation of the knowledge acquired during their degree was positive. The professional tasks they engaged in most were technically complex tasks requiring a level of expertise, and the majority of the respondents were employed. In what appears to be a new trend, in certain cases respondents had found employment in the private sector. An increase was also observed in the use of the Internet to obtain a professional position and in respondents’ professional interest in acquiring project planning and management skills in information and documentation.

Objective: This paper examines the current offering of the subject Project Management in bachelor’s and master’s degrees in information and documentation in Ibero-America, focusing on the countries Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela. The paper analyses different features of the subject in these degree courses to provide a general overview.

Methodology: A search obtained information about the offering of the subject Project Management in degree courses at an international level and the results were examined by university and by degree course. The university curricula were then analysed according to specific selection criteria, as outlined in the paper, and the researchers corresponded by email with the teaching staff responsible for these courses. Various parameters were studied and then recorded in a database. Finally, the results were analysed.

Results: After the universities, degrees and subjects had been identified and selected according to the research criteria, it was observed that 77% of the entire offering that included the degree course subject Project Management was to be found in first-cycle (bachelor’s) degrees, and that Mexico, Colombia and Spain were the countries where the offering was greatest. The study also showed that Project Management was a compulsory subject in 86 % of the sample analysed.

Nombre d'ofertes per any

Objective: This paper analyses the number, nature and conditions of job offers in the job listings published by the internet forum IweTel during the period January 2008-December 2013.

Methodology: The characteristics of job offers were analysed using statistical analysis. In many cases, the data had to be normalized before it could be used.

Results: Employment in information and documentation clearly fell during the six-year period studied, from 2008 when a total of 190 job offers were listed, to 2013 when that figure had dropped to 35. The precarity of the labour market was also noted, especially in the length of employment time offered. The organization that most frequently used the forum was typically a document service company with headquarters in Madrid, and the jobs most frequently advertised were for professionals in cataloguing. The IweTel forum was considered a valuable source of data because it has the largest mailing list for information professionals in Spain; its disadvantage was that IweTel is most frequently used by private ventures who are familiar with the sector, while other types of company advertise there less frequently or not at all.

Objective: This paper describes the production of bibliometric studies in Catalonia in quantitative terms. It examines publications that use bibliometric tools to determine features of scientific production but excludes journals that present or discuss bibliometric methods and techniques.

Methodology: Bibliometric tools were used to analyse the registers of a relational database obtained from various sources, including the bibliographic databases of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA), and the index Library Literature and Information Science. Searches were also performed using PubMed, Dialnet, and Google Scholar, and references were obtained by citation chaining.

Results: A total of 297 documents were identified, of which 76.8 % were journal articles. These examined a substantial number of knowledge areas, of which biomedicine was especially prominent. The subject matter of the documents ranged across the spectrum of the knowledge areas analysed. In general, the studies that predominated addressed Spain, although there were variations that also responded to this range of areas. The predominant language was Spanish, most papers were co-authored by two or more authors and the most common author arrangement was a collaboration between departmental members.

Objectives: This paper examines how student interest in the scientific field of information and documentation can be identified and motivated, using the results of a study in the Spanish autonomous community of Extremadura.

Methodology: A 15-item questionnaire was administered to identify the value students assigned to creative, volitional and intellectual skills and a 25-item questionnaire was administered to identify the value they assigned to specific skills in information and documentation. Student interest was motivated by group discussions and specialized seminars. The respondents were first- and second-year university students at the University of Extremadura studying the bachelor’s degree Information and Documentation in its face-to-face mode during the academic year 2011-2012, and sixth-form students in centres of secondary education in the city of Badajoz, especially students of social sciences.

Results: In their assessment of creative, volitional and intellectual skills and of specific skills in information and documentation, the first- and second-year university students’ average score was higher than 83%. The interest shown in skills in information and documentation by the sixth-form students was also high, and the average score given was 66%. However, both groups assigned greater value to general skills than to specific skills. We argue that this is indicative of students’ customary lack knowledge of the subjects which the degree is supposed to make them specialists of, and that educators must therefore find more effective ways of promoting the importance of these subjects.

Objectives: This paper examines how users read concept maps and seeks to identify those parts of concept maps that users focus on most and the order in which maps are reviewed.

Methodology: The study used eye-tracking methodology.

Results: It was observed that when reading concept maps users paid most attention to second horizontal entry levels and to the central area of the map. There was no significant difference of degree in the attention they paid to nodes or connecting sentences, and users initially read down the map, from one side to the other, from the root concept positioned at the top and in the middle of the map to the concept positioned at the bottom right-hand corner.

Figura 1. Servicios 2.0 incluidos en las tecnologías de nivel 2

Objectives: This paper examines the provision of Web 2.0 services and the consequent exclusion of Web 1.0 services in different libraries in the Basque network of public online libraries (Euskadiko Irakurketa Publikoko Sarea) in the province of Biscay.

Methodology: The researchers conducted case studies of different libraries in the network using a series of parameters and indicators to determine the provision of Web 2.0 and Web 1.0 services. Some of the parameters that were used are customary in the field while others were tailored to the requirements of the study. The data were retrieved during the period between September 2012 and February 2013.

Results: A disparity was observed between the libraries where some libraries consistently offered just Web 1.0 services while others offered a wide range of Web 2.0 services, which were fully maintained and updated. The main findings of this study were presented in the formulation of a Web 2.0 drop rate, an indicator that quantifies the effect of the trend for Web 2.0 services.
